“For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” ~ Revelation 18:5
The world is completely engulfed in sin and immorality because of its rebellion against God. But God still has great mercy reaching to them (if they will receive it) because most of them have never known Jesus Christ and his truth that delivers from all sin.
But then there are others who know better. They are religious “Christians” but yet they still live a corrupted life by the power of sinful desires driving their actions. These people not only falsely claim to be Christians, but they also discourage others from even wanting to be a Christian. These kind of people really provoke the Lord to anger!
So why is the Lord so sick of hypocrisy? The scripture we just read said:
“For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” ~ Revelation 18:5
Sin cannot come into God’s heaven above. No sin can enter there. But hypocrites will try to infiltrate the gathering of the true people of God, by hanging around a place that is described as a heavenly place on Earth.
“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” ~ Ephesians 2:6
When God’s true people gather together to worship God in Spirit and in truth, God is amongst them. So it is described as a heavenly place.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love” ~ Ephesians 1:3-4
It is heavenly because God has saved his true people and they now live holy. But when false Christians come amongst them, this corruption is majorly offensive to God and his people! Because the hypocrites will eventually want to persecute the true Christians. Therefore Jesus commands us to preach doubly against hypocrisy, placing strong gospel judgement upon it.
“For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.” ~ Revelation 18:5-6
Twice Jesus states “double” her judgement reward. There are many reasons he states this.
First hypocrites deceive people into being twice blinded. First blinded by sin, and then secondly blinded by a false belief that they can continue in sinful self-righteousness and still be saved.
- “Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” ~ Matthew 15:14
- “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” ~ Matthew 23:15
Secondly, throughout history, fake Christianity has wrongly persecuted true and faithful Christians many times. First through the fallen condition of Catholicism, and secondly through through the many fallen systems of religious Protestantism.
Therefore Jesus clearly declares judgement upon these fake religious systems that claim to be the bride of Christ (the Church), but they are not:
“Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.” ~ Revelation 18:6
God’s judgement wrath is strong against the hypocrisy of fake Christianity. If you are part of her, Jesus strongly warns: “get out of there!”
“…Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” ~ Revelation 18:4
Note: this diagram below shows where the eighteenth chapter is within the full Revelation message. The judgment messages of chapter 18 are also part of completing the purpose of God to destroy the influence of hypocrisy.
