Again, in Revelation 3:12 Jesus said he would not only give them the family name of “God” but he would also give them “the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God…” He is speaking of the church as the spiritual Jerusalem. Spiritual Jerusalem is not built by men, just as God’s church is not created by men. Jesus came down to earth, dwelt amongst us, and established his church by saving people from sin and unifying them under one King – Jesus. Therefore that city came “down out of heaven from my God.” Jesus is married to this spiritual city, therefore those born into this city are children of the spiritual mother:
- “But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” (Galatians 4:26)
- “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Revelation 21:2)
The highest place in Jerusalem was mount Zion (also known as Sion) where the temple of God was built. Spiritually the temple of God, where God’s presence is and where he is worshiped, is the highest spiritual place in spiritual Jerusalem. He is worshiped from the hearts of those he has saved and sanctified by the blood of Jesus and the indwelling of his Holy Spirit:
- “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect” (Hebrews 12:22-23)
- “There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” (Psalms 46:4-5)
Are you a member of that glorious city, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God? It is a holy and a pure city, because all her members have been made holy and pure, and they have kept themselves that way.
“His foundation is in the holy mountains. The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God.” (Psalms 87:1-3)
