“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.” (Revelation 2:11)

Again, can you hear what the Spirit of God is saying? As already stated in earlier posts, this exact same question is asked at the end of each message to each church – it is the Spirit of God working in every church age. (see prior post: “هل لديك أذن تسمع وتطيع؟“) Also note: that at the end of each message to the churches, he always addresses those who “overcometh”. He does this because in every age of time there has always been those who overcame all evil and false worship to faithfully serve the Lord. God has always had a true people, regardless of how many hypocrites lived otherwise – and the same is true even today. God will always have a remnant that will live holy and be true to his Word. There has never been an excuse for living less.

Now to the over-comers in Smyrna he promises that they “shall not be hurt of the second death.” The first death is the separation from God that happens when one sins. This is exactly what happened to Adam and Eve when they sinned in the Garden of Eden. God told them in the day they would sin by eating of the forbidden fruit “they would die.” But physically they did not die. So then it was a spiritual death they died – and that death was a separation from God. First they hid themselves from God for fear of him, and finally they were separated from the Garden completely and from God’s special presence. (see Genesis chapter 3)

Do you not know that even today, all it takes is one sin to separate you from God? God has not changed – but through Jesus Christ we can be changed so we can have to power to not sin anymore.

Now this is why we need to know the pure truth of the Gospel that sets us free from sin! All sin can be forgiven, so if you sin there is hope – if you will sincerely and fully repent (turn away) from all sin. You must be absolutely sincere in your efforts to stop sin and to fully believe the truth of God’s word. Additionally, if you want to stay on the right way – you must quit following false preachers that teach you otherwise!

The “second death” is the final, permanent separation from God (with no hope of mercy) into eternal torment, if you should die without all your sins being washed away:

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” (Rev 20:14)
