“The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.” ~ Revelation 8:7

When Jesus first established his church and empowered them with the Holy Ghost, the message of the blood of Christ had a double effect. For those who welcomed his salvation, his blood was mercy for their soul. For those who crucified him and continued to resist his mercy, they became even more blood guilty.

This first trumpet reflects the effect of the preaching of the gospel in the first seal, or the “morning time of the Gospel day.” It reflects both the effect of the gospel on the self-righteous Jews, and the effect it had on the rest of the pagan gentiles.

Consequently, the gospel message to the Jewish hypocrites was as judgement hail and fire, mingled with blood. That is why Peter preached from an Old Testament prophesy on the day of Pentecost and said:

“And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke” ~ Acts 2:18-19

Living trees represent people whose lives are righteous through Jesus Christ. That is why Jesus quoted the following scripture in the synagogue when he first started his ministry.

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.” ~ Isaiah 61:3

But another prophecy from Isaiah which spoke of preparing the way to receive Jesus Christ, also spoke of judgement upon those who would reject him. It stated that those who reject him, would be like the grass that would wither under the sounding of the Word (which is the gospel trumpet.)

“The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” ~ Isaiah 40:3-8

So we see that the sounding of the of first trumpet especially happened in the morning time of the Gospel day. This does not exclude the gospel from working this way at any other time in history. But it is just especially emphasized during the first couple centuries of the gospel day. During that time a third of those who seemed to be righteous, were eventually shown to be burned up by the gospel judgement. And of course, those who never claimed to be righteous, were also spiritually burned by the gospel truth of Jesus Christ.

Of course, if any would be honest and repent of their sin, they could then be made righteous by the blood of Christ. This does not mean they were physically burned up, but rather that the strong gospel message exposed that they were spiritually dead in their soul!

So where has the full gospel of Jesus Christ found you? Does it find you as spiritual grass that easily dries up and burns? Or has the blood of Christ saved you from all sin and changed your heart so that you are as a deep-rooted, righteous tree planting, of the Lord? For righteous trees will not wither under the trumpet sounding of judgement preaching!

“Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” ~ Jeremiah 17:7-8
