When a Third Part of the Sun, Moon, and Stars Become Dark

“And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.” ~ Revelation 8:12

There are numerous warnings of impending judgement within the Scriptures, with many using the allegorical scope of “one third”. Five out of seven of the Revelation trumpet angel messages contain this “one third” allegorical scope:

  • 1st trumpet angel – one third of trees burned up
  • 2nd trumpet angel – one third of sea turned into blood, one third of ships in sea destroyed
  • 3rd trumpet angel – one third part of rivers and fountains of waters became wormwood bitter
  • 4th trumpet angel – one third part of heavenly lights: sun, moon, stars became darkened
  • 5th trumpet angel – no mention of “one third”, but everyone, except those that are sealed, are tormented by the army of horse shaped locusts with scorpion tails
  • 6th trumpet angel – one third are killed by an army fighting with: fire, smoke, brimstone, and the tail of a serpent head
  • 7th trumpet angel – no third mentioned, but rather the long completion of the rest of Revelation, with complete judgement upon all the unrighteous

And so here in the fourth trumpet we have one third of the light we get from heaven being darkened. This is spiritual symbolic language. It is speaking about the true light from Jesus Christ being darkened in the understanding of men and women. This happens because one third of the sun, moon, and stars were darkened. So the sun, moon and the stars in this scripture represent spiritual things.

“And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.” ~ Revelation 8:12

The moon and the sun were ordained from the beginning to rule, and to divide the light from the darkness.

“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” ~ Genesis 1:14-19

Note: It is interesting that in the Genesis account, that God created the sun and the moon in the fourth day. And that in the fourth trumpet, God is warning us about the darkening of the spiritual Sun and Moon.

If one third of the “spiritual” heavenly lights are darkened, then the darkness is not being fully divided from the light, creating shades of gray and obscuring the truth. Spiritually that spells “trouble” because Satan is working some kind of false Christianity deception!

The sun spiritually represents the full light of the New Testament that came by Jesus Christ.

“But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” ~ Malachi 4:2

Whenever Jesus was revealed clearly as who he really is, it was described as light as bright as or brighter than the sun.

  • “And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.” ~ Matthew 17:2
  • “At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.” ~ Acts 26:13-15

The moon represents the Old Testament because it has no light in of itself. But it’s light only comes by reflecting the sun’s light. Therefore the moon only gives you the ability to see things in a black and white way, as we see things in the shadows of the night through the moonlight. And so it is appropriate that the Old Testament also brought in the Mosaic law, which was a “black and white” way of governing the righteousness of the people.

“For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.” ~ Hebrews 8:3-5

But through the bright sunlight we see clearly things in full color. So the light of Christ enables us to see the true image of Old Testament spiritual things.

“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.” ~ Hebrews 10:1

Jesus Christ was the complete fulfillment of the Law of Moses. The Law only provided a partial reflection of the light, and cast a shadow that outlined the true. But the Law was not the fulfillment of the true light. The bright light of truth, and the perfect image of the truth, came through Jesus Christ. For the bright spiritual sunlight that comes by Christ brings forth the clarity of all things, and in full color.

And of course, we know from the first chapter of Revelation that spiritually stars represent the ministry. These stars are responsible for delivering God’s message and leading people to Christ. Just as the physical star led the wise men to Christ shortly after he was born.

So what happens when the ministry becomes darkened (one third stars), and their preaching of the Old and New Testament becomes darkened (one third of the light from the moon and sun)? False doctrines are on their way, and the schisms and divisions of denominationalism will follow.

Is that not especially what we have seen happen since the sixteenth century? In that century, during the Reformation, the Bible began to be more widely published in the language of the common people. So knowledge and understanding of the scripture greatly grew.

So when some of the ministers gain light and understanding, but they do not fully obey it themselves, they start to use it for their own purposes. A different spirit than the Holy Spirit is now directing them: and this darkens the light and understanding of those they minister to!

It is all because stars (representing a ministry) were darkened. And because the ministry was darkened in their leadership: they darkened understanding in the sun (representing the New Testament) and the moon (representing the Old Testament).

So has your understanding been darkened today by the effects of what a darkened ministry from past history has done? Many darkened teachings have been taught for so long, that many people believe them as gospel still today.

One example that is extremely common: “You cannot live like Jesus. You must still sin, even if Christ has forgiven you.” But there is a multitude of scripture teaching us that we can be delivered completely from sin, and live holy.

Have the darkened stars darkened the sun and the moon for you? If sincerely from your heart you want to live holy, Jesus will help you. But if you don’t want to be completely free, Jesus will allow you to believe a lie.

“And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie” ~ 2 Thessalonians 2:11

Spiritual light is the blessing God provides to those who have been healed of the confusion of darkness through a whole hearted purpose, to love and obey Christ.

“Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the Lord bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.” ~ Isaiah 30:26

We are living in the days when a seven-fold brightness of gospel light is being shown to those who desire it, and search for it. Are you one of those?

Reference note: The scriptures show us in many places that this analogy of darkening the stars, sun, and moon, is often used to show God’s judgement against those who are not completely sincere and honest in their service to God. For your own study, here is a list of many examples in scripture where this same analogy is used:

  • Judgement against Babylon’s evils: Isaiah 13:9-11 – “Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
  • Judgement against Egypt’s evils: Ezekiel 32:7-9 – “And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God . I will also vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast not known.”
  • Judgement against Jerusalem’s evils: Joel 2:10-14 – The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? Therefore also now, saith the Lord , turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?”
  • Judgement against heathen who spoiled Jerusalem: Joel 3:14-16 – “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.”
  • Judgement in the latter days against the hypocrisy of people: Matthew 24:29-30 – “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
  • Again, judgement in the latter days against hypocrisy: Mark 13:22-27 – “For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.”

So this message from the fourth trumpet of Revelation has already spiritually been preached many times. The question is whether we have an ear to hear it at any time.
